One formula decides where nearly 1,700 colleges rank. Colleges have learned to game it.

We explain how the rankings are built and what matters for you. One formula scores every college on the same inputs, and a fifth of it is administrators at other schools rating each other. Publish a formula and some schools optimize for the formula instead of the four years a student actually spends on campus. A college can climb the table without a single class getting better.

Then we separate the two kinds of change. Some colleges genuinely improved: better retention, better outcomes for the students who need the most support. Others moved a number that costs them nothing and changes nothing for you. Every Saturday morning we take one ranking apart and say which is which.
